The fourth graders have been working on Folktales in class. For part of their study, they created comic strip stories. During our tech time over the last two weeks the students have become quite proficient at using Pixton to create their comics. One of my favorite parts of this project was that as the students learned the different features of the program they shared their knowledge and helped each other with tips they learned. Here are the comics that are completed so far...

The 5th through 8th graders have been participating in the global Student Blogging Challenge. This is the 10th blogging challenge. Each challenge has had hundreds of students and classrooms participating from countries all across the world. Weekly tasks are posted that are designed to improve students blogging and commenting skills while connecting students with a global audience. Additional ideas are also listed in the weekly posts; things that help students improve their blogs. Each Sunday a new challenge is posted. By Monday, I have it posted to our Student Blogging Challenge Website. The ECA students are beginning to become more comfortable with how to post in Weebly, the website platform that we use. Here you can see the list of the many of our student’s blogs. Some of the skills we are working on include: · Writing a post that follows the directions of the challenge · Formatting the post: adding pictures and editing the post · Designing the blog and webpage so it is visually appealing · Adding details like “About the Author” info, html code for badges and other web application extras · Learning how to comment in a constructive way Blogging still feels new for many of the students, but it seems like they are enjoying the challenge more as they become comfortable and confident in their blogging skills. The third graders integrated technology into their graphing unit of study. 1st & 2nd Tech Class Periods: First, working in pairs, students created a survey question and followed directions to input that question into Surveymonkey.com. When they were finished Mrs. Gamache posted each group’s poll on the tech lab website and encouraged many of the other classes to answer the survey. 3rd Tech Class Period: Students used a graphing program online to enter the data from their surveys and create and save a bar or pie graph. 4th Tech Class Period: Students divided a large box of Lucky Charms and tallied each type of charm they had. We then compiled all the data. 5th Tech Class Period: Students used the online graphing program and created one or two graphs with the Lucky Charm data. 6th Tech Class Period:
Students compared their class data to the data from another class in New Jersey, chatting with that class via Skype. We also learned more about each of our states and activities that we like to do. It was a fun wrap up to the project. The second graders have been working on learning about landforms. They used interactive activities and videos in the technology lab. They also worked on completing an interactive PowerPoint.
After opening the PowerPoint template from the tech lab website they had to follow step by step directions to open the presentation as a slideshow and then use the hyperlink to take them to a Google image search of the landform featured on each page. They then had to follow directions to choose a picture, learn how to open it, copy it and paste it into their presentation. Next they had to edit it to a workable size and then use the text box to label the landform. A few of our 2nd graders helped narrate one of the PowerPoint presentations to share with you as a video. |
