The fourth graders enjoyed exploring several of our new STEM puzzles and brain teasers. They used challenge cards to build and expand the 3D puzzles and Wedgits materials that we have added to our Makerspace.

4th through 8th grade students attended a fun STEM field trip to Rollhaven. They learned about the history and science of rollerskating. E.C.A. held our first swap meet in honor of Earth day. Students were invited to bring in some of their old things that they never use anymore to trade for other things (shoes that are too small, old toys, knick-knacks, etc.) Children were asked to bring in 1-5 parent approved items to trade with their peers for new treasures. This awesome event came to E.C.A. after Destination Imagination participants shared their wonderful experiences with a similar event during our recent tournament. Mr. Gerry returned to ECA to share his passion about space with each class. The children learned about planets, the Hubble telescope as well as the Webb, the upcoming solar eclipse, the newest solar system and so much more. As always, the children are delighted with his visits! Mrs. M and I have begun a school-wide STEAM project. We are participating in the Global Awesome Squiggles Collaborative Art Project 2017. Students from grades kindergarten through middle school are creating art based on the same four squiggles as hundreds of classrooms world-wide. Fourth grade and up will also try their hand at creating digital art with the template. We will be sharing the students artwork in a variety of ways using various technology. A few of the classes will take it a step farther as we connect with classrooms around the world via skype, twitter, facebook, etc. We are so excited to be a part of this huge project! Our four teams had the opportunity to share the excitement with our student body. They performed their central challenges and invited other students and adults to participate in an instant challenge. We celebrated the end of an awesome season with team members and their families immediately following school. You can see even more pictures here. ECA sent four teams and a total of 21 students to the Destination Imagination tournament. We took two non-competitive Rising Stars teams comprised of kindergarten and first graders. We took two competitive teams, one from elementary with third and fourth graders and a middle school team. We had an amazing time and the children did a fantastic job! We are working on posting video of their competition here.
Students all over the world have been working on computer coding this week as part of the "Hour of Code" international project. Last week we introduced coding starting in the first grade. So far first - 3rd grade have spent nearly 4 hours coding with more to come. First and second grade will continue with kodable after spending time with code.org and Tynker.
Third and fourth graders are working through various tutorials on Scratch and learning how to create their own games. Next month they will continue their coding and move into some electronics as well as they build their own game consoles. |
