The third graders have begun building their balloon cars. While researching they worked on gathering ideas. Then students collected materials and today they began creating their idea of a balloon car. We can't wait to observe the results. First and Second Grades tested how far our cars would go down an inclined plan on both carpet and wood flooring and predicted the results and recorded our observations. We are learning about Inclined planes, gravity and friction.
1st - 4th grade students extended the STEM Oreo Challenge into a STEAM activity with Mrs. M our Art teacher. Kindergarten students participated in this experience during their center time in their classroom. Mrs. M discussed the chemistry and ingredients that make the different textures of the cookie - students experienced how the sugar and fat in the frosting changed when the warmth of their hands heated it up. What is STEAM? It is Science Technology Engineering Art & Mathematics and it is creative, fun and in this activity yummy!
Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade students participated in the Global Oreo Challenge. Students had two tries to stack as many Oreos as they could with one hand and record their results. We counted, multiplied and divided the results as a group with the k-2 students. The third graders computed the results using an Excel spreadsheet and the 4th graders tallied the results using Google Sheets. The best part was sampling a cookie!
Students 5th through 8th grades went to Applewood Estate in Flint for a STEM field trip. Students made observations about the MSU weather station and visited the online weather station extension. Students compared and contrasted old technology and engineering with the new technology that currently on the estate. Students worked in groups to create solar heaters using simple materials. Perhaps the favorite activity, was eating applecake made from apples picked on the estate. Finally, we wrapped up our visit to Flint with a quick visit to the Farmer's Market. Students helped teachers pick out fresh produce, bread, cream and honey which they enjoyed sampling the following school day.
