The fourth graders had the opportunity to participate in a live interview with Ella Al-Shamahi, a Paleoanthropologist. Mr. Steve, who hosted the interview was connecting with us from South Africa and Ms. Al-Shamahi was talking to us from London. The students also got to chat informally before the interview officially started and met another teacher from Nepal. It was cool seeing four continents represented in the interview and finding out about the different time zones.

A group of National Honor Society students from Lake Orion High School helped this year at our annual STEAM Recycled Fashion Event. The event happened after school from 3:30-6:30. All the participants had a fabulous time.
This week we moved from part one of our project to part two. In this task, the students research simple ways to mechanically move a figure, using links found here. Now they are creating the crank mechanism to manually move a figure. We are using paper plates, paper clips, pliers, scissors and tape for this part of the project. So far, everyone has a working crank. The students are very excited they have moving parts! Next time we will create a moving character.
The fourth graders created cardboard figures using the Engineering Design Process. They researched using links provided here and then using only a paper plate, pencil and scissors, created a figure that could stand. Then they looked at how they could improve their figure and created a new one that worked even better. Third and fourth grades each got to create three dimensional trees using the maker space this week. They were able to choose any materials and create. They had to think about the geometric shape of the tree and how to make their tree a similar shape. They had fun creating but really enjoyed the process. Today the fourth graders connected with a group of 3rd graders to contribute to a discussion: What is the most important cultural universal: food, water, shelter or health/safety? The researched and took notes and then recorded their position on a flipgrid. This project made researching fun and interactive. The fourth graders have completed their public service announcements relating to stopping animal abuse and neglect. Students researched facts and use Adobe.Spark to create their videos. They worked in their classroom on their chromebooks during class time and STEM time.
The fourth and the fifth grades are learning how to create spreadsheets using Microsoft Office. Both classes are doing a similar activity where they use a budget and select items and then use autosum to add. The fifth graders are learning how to create a formula. They are learning how to find the difference - or subtract. In this instance, they are finding the difference between their budget and the total spent. All students are working on creating a graph and customizing it. They are doing a great job! |
