The middle school students were given the challenge to create and build a toy or game with moving parts. They are diving into the challenge.
A group of National Honor Society students from Lake Orion High School helped this year at our annual STEAM Recycled Fashion Event. The event happened after school from 3:30-6:30. All the participants had a fabulous time.
The middle school students created maker proposals this month. They researched and submitted their idea on what they wanted to work on. Students choose wood burning projects, 3D Pen projects, stop motion projects, sewing projects and soldering sculpture projects. As they have finished they have been assisting classmates or choosing new activities. They love the freedom and choices and I love the creativity and skill building. Today it was so wonderful to see how the MakerSpace has become the heart of our building. The first picture shows the middle school students doing science research, the 3rd graders working on a STEM building/coding project and some junior kindergartners using the library area and others using the engineering toys. 5th and up were asked to record a brief message on Flipgrid to answer the question "Why is STEM fun?" They were also asked to brainstorm other ways to use flipgrid which some of the students use this topic to share as well. Click here to hear what the students had to say. The middle school students were delighted with the opportunity to explore our new high level marble run material in the MakerSpace. Goal #1 has been to create a working marble run. There has been a lot of discussion on momentum and deceleration and angles of the downward slope to keep the marble from jumping. The end goal is to connect the three groups individual runs into one project. Middle school students traveled to Northern Michigan for a three day field trip. Students visited several areas of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park and later conducted experiments with sand and water tension. We spend two nights in a lodge at the Traverse City State Park and enjoyed the unseasonably warm weather when we swam in Lake Michigan and enjoyed games, bonfires, s’mores and other team building activities. The highlight of our trip was when students conducted authentic research and investigated the ecology of the Great Lakes as well as learned a little bit about how to sail schooner Inland Seas. Students followed this activity up by building and testing underwater remote controlled vehicles on board the Utopia at Discovery Pier in Traverse City. Our trip wrapped up with a visit to the local farmers market, putt-putt and a stop at a favorite local diner before returning home. |
