The kindergartners enjoyed a new open ended 3D building activity along with other engineering and building centers during STEM today.

The kindergarten students enjoyed the challenge of building "Christmas Trees" out of solo cups with a partner. On Saturday, some of our Rising Stars went to a team training in Waterford. They attended several different workshops. In one, they worked with another partial team to create a quick tower with paper (no tape). They used the folding trick they learned during last weeks DI meeting! In the instant challenge workshop, they had to build a structure that went under AND over the "bridge" without touching it. They earned extra points because their structure could also hold all the weights. We had a lot of fun and are so excited about the upcoming season! Our DI Lite Rising Stars group has kicked off and is up to the challenges their Managers are tossing their way. Today they had to create a bridge over "water" that would allow a "boat" to go under and that would span a distance longer than a pencil. They did a great job meeting the challenge. They learned how triangles are stronger than flat paper...they are so strong that cardboard is full of triangles!
The kindergarten students enjoyed a variety of STEM centers today. There were a mix of building/engineering activities with some coding challenges. It's fun to see the brain building going on.
The kindergarten class enjoyed a new coding game this week. They got our pirates to the treasure and avoided the bombs. Then they repeated the activity in a smaller version with a partner. It was great fun. The first and second graders used the same manipulatives but their challenges were much harder. Everyone is enjoying our hands-on coding.
Our Kindergarten and first grade classes have been the first to try out one of our new STEM "toys", the Code-a-pillar. They are great for problem solving, planning and sequencing and critical thinking. Working in small groups the children piloted some activities with the plan that they may be able to introduce those activities to younger students within the MakerSpace and create challenges for them. In these videos they were exploring and predicting. As they put different direction pieces onto the Code-a-pillar they then predicted where the creature would end up. They had a great time in our Makerspace!
E.C.A. held our first swap meet in honor of Earth day. Students were invited to bring in some of their old things that they never use anymore to trade for other things (shoes that are too small, old toys, knick-knacks, etc.) Children were asked to bring in 1-5 parent approved items to trade with their peers for new treasures. This awesome event came to E.C.A. after Destination Imagination participants shared their wonderful experiences with a similar event during our recent tournament. |
