The 5th grade students are in the midst of their Engineer a Box project. It's fun to see the creative minds tackling the task! A group of National Honor Society students from Lake Orion High School helped this year at our annual STEAM Recycled Fashion Event. The event happened after school from 3:30-6:30. All the participants had a fabulous time.
The fifth grade students presented the court case of The Westing Game. They did an amazing job. Check out the video here or by clicking on the picture.
5th and up were asked to record a brief message on Flipgrid to answer the question "Why is STEM fun?" They were also asked to brainstorm other ways to use flipgrid which some of the students use this topic to share as well. Click here to hear what the students had to say. The 5th graders are exploring a variety of materials to MAKE in the MakerSpace. Now that we have tried the 3D pens and the wood burners, we are hoping for a few more, as their is a line to use them. The sewing station has been very interesting as well. The fifth graders are working on an integrated STEM project where the goal is to design a better tend and build a prototype. They have been working on some research and now it's time to hit the MakerSpace and begin the build. Have you ever noticed that the older a child is, the more sophisticated the “play”. Last Thursday we had a brief school wide power outage-right at the end of the 5th grade's STEM class...right as I asked them to save their complete or nearly completed Excel projects. Today we tried to open them. Most didn’t have all their hard work updated and some were completely corrupted frustrating everyone. So what did we do when we were thrown a curve-ball-we had an unplanned session in the MakerSpace. I love watching how the 5th graders used many of the materials that the littlest kids use. I love their discussions, collaborations, and complex projects. I especially loved the smiles on their faces. |
