The fourth and the fifth grades are learning how to create spreadsheets using Microsoft Office. Both classes are doing a similar activity where they use a budget and select items and then use autosum to add. The fifth graders are learning how to create a formula. They are learning how to find the difference - or subtract. In this instance, they are finding the difference between their budget and the total spent. All students are working on creating a graph and customizing it. They are doing a great job!

4th through 8th grade students attended a fun STEM field trip to Rollhaven. They learned about the history and science of rollerskating. 5th -8th grade students enjoyed a Skype conversation with middle school students from Ottawa, Canada. Students talked a little bit about our schools and the weather...our students were shocked it was 14 degrees there and they were shocked it was 61 degrees here...it provided a little lesson on Celsius and Fahrenheit. Finally, the students shared their art pieces which are part of a global project. It was a wonderful experience.
E.C.A. held our first swap meet in honor of Earth day. Students were invited to bring in some of their old things that they never use anymore to trade for other things (shoes that are too small, old toys, knick-knacks, etc.) Children were asked to bring in 1-5 parent approved items to trade with their peers for new treasures. This awesome event came to E.C.A. after Destination Imagination participants shared their wonderful experiences with a similar event during our recent tournament. Mr. Gerry returned to ECA to share his passion about space with each class. The children learned about planets, the Hubble telescope as well as the Webb, the upcoming solar eclipse, the newest solar system and so much more. As always, the children are delighted with his visits! The older students at E.C.A. have been campaigning for a Gaga Ball pit ever since returning from camp. Today, they started researching what is needed to build such a thing here at E.C.A. Everyone simultaneously collaborated on a Google Slides document and they were greeted with the best surprise - an opportunity to play gaga ball! We're looking forward to the next step in this project. Mrs. M and I have begun a school-wide STEAM project. We are participating in the Global Awesome Squiggles Collaborative Art Project 2017. Students from grades kindergarten through middle school are creating art based on the same four squiggles as hundreds of classrooms world-wide. Fourth grade and up will also try their hand at creating digital art with the template. We will be sharing the students artwork in a variety of ways using various technology. A few of the classes will take it a step farther as we connect with classrooms around the world via skype, twitter, facebook, etc. We are so excited to be a part of this huge project! After a little break - we returned to create the top of the water bottle greenhouses. One group used more water bottles. The other group scavenged in our recycling area and found clear egg cartons to use. We can't wait to test them - hopefully next week when the snow melts.
Students from grades 5th-8th worked on a problem solving/teamwork activity. Working in groups they had to replicate a structure. The challenge came when only one team member could view the structure and report back on how to build it using only words. They did an amazing job! The 5,6,7&8th graders have begun their water bottle greenhouse prototypes. They have developed a few different theories on how they'd like to construct the greenhouses and broke into groups. Each group will use a different method to make a small test greenhouse. After they are constructed we will test them to determine which method will work best.
