Today all the kindergarteners enjoyed STEM centers and computer times. Children explored Christmas activities during their computer time. The other half of their time was spent exploring with Strawbees, Magnetic Power Clix, 3D building playsets or cardboard blocks. The children had a wonderful time! What makes a toy work? Students pulled apart several toys to see how they work. Some had lots of electronic components, but other had none and used simple machines and still others used a combination of old and new. It was fascinating! Please send in any old broken toys - we'd like to do some more exploring! Today the third grade students had a choice of activities which included:
#1 Continue coding on the computers using Scratch #2 Build a cylinder telescope to help Santa in his Travels #3 Construct a Christmas tree that stands on it's own using pipe cleaners #4 Build a "christmas tree" using plastic cups #5 Construct a set of stairs for the elves to use when climbing up and down from Santa's sleigh Middle schoolers have been choosing their makerspace projects in pairs or small groups. Building a rollercoaster with KNex Creating an original game by coding on Scratch Researching, gathering supplies and building a marshmallow shooter
This week the first graders explored two different paint programs. First they listened to a story, then they created a picture and wrote about their favorite part of the story. One day they concentrated on KidPix, a program loaded on the lab computers. The next session, they gave a web based program a try. These are great activities for following directions and growing in proficiency in mouse control. Click on the picture below to visit the live links to the activity and check out the slideshow of their art! The second graders joined us for the web based program as well! Students all over the world have been working on computer coding this week as part of the "Hour of Code" international project. Last week we introduced coding starting in the first grade. So far first - 3rd grade have spent nearly 4 hours coding with more to come. First and second grade will continue with kodable after spending time with code.org and Tynker.
Third and fourth graders are working through various tutorials on Scratch and learning how to create their own games. Next month they will continue their coding and move into some electronics as well as they build their own game consoles. Middle school students have finished their quilt squares and have moved on to some makerspace activities. All of the students are getting the opportunity to do some wood burning. After that, they are choosing from a variety of makerspace activities to work on between now and the holiday.
