A group of National Honor Society students from Lake Orion High School helped this year at our annual STEAM Recycled Fashion Event. The event happened after school from 3:30-6:30. All the participants had a fabulous time.
This week we moved from part one of our project to part two. In this task, the students research simple ways to mechanically move a figure, using links found here. Now they are creating the crank mechanism to manually move a figure. We are using paper plates, paper clips, pliers, scissors and tape for this part of the project. So far, everyone has a working crank. The students are very excited they have moving parts! Next time we will create a moving character.
The first graders worked on the engineer and design process as they created a LEGO "vehicle" that would attach and successfully go down our zipline. They had to problem solve to combine materials - the LEGOs and the plastic chain links. Then then had to make it work with our pulley - if it was too light it wouldn't go. The goal was to go all the way down and bump into the chair. They had a blast!
The fourth graders created cardboard figures using the Engineering Design Process. They researched using links provided here and then using only a paper plate, pencil and scissors, created a figure that could stand. Then they looked at how they could improve their figure and created a new one that worked even better. |
